Hola FruitaI recently discovered I was lactose intolerant after eating a delicious bowl of Spumoni Ice cream. This discovery really sucked because there’s nothing I like better than a nice big bowl of ice cream after a rough day. But a few weeks ago I was given an offer I couldn’t refuse.

A representative from an ice cream company I had never heard of, called Pierre’s Ice Cream, contacted me about sampling and reviewing their new product–Hola Fruta! Free stuff?! I was intrigued. I love trying new things especially items that I can’t get here in my little town. So I agreed.

I figured I’d get a couple of those itty bitty containers of ice cream. You know the ones that have maybe 4 ounces of ice cream, and look like they should be in some 6 year old girl’s doll house. I was surprised when I opened my door and found a large box with dry ice containing 3 quarts, 1 pint, and 2 boxes of bars of various flavors of sherbet. Hola Fruta on a spoonI felt like a kid on Christmas morning. I wanted to open them all up and sample them right then and there, but my hips held me back!

So I have to say, I was given quite the selection of flavors to choose from: pomegranate and bluberry, strawberry, margarita, mango, and pina colada. Now I must be honest with you. I don’t like sherbet. I remember as a kid this weird sour/sweet stuff that my sister liked to eat. Me? Not so much. So even though I was excited about all the free stuff, I was kind of bummed that it was sherbet and not ice cream. But after one bite, OMG! I’m hooked!

This sherbet is amazing, it has a wonderfully creamy consistency that reminds of the gilato David and I became addicted to in Rome. It’s almost like a frozen yogurt with it’s light creaminess. Oh all the flavors, my favorite hands-down was the pina colada. It actually came in a bar that was only 100 calories. Ok, I’m not much of a calorie counter, but hello, talk about a snack you don’t have to feel guilty about-low fat, no cholesterol, tons of pineapple and coconut bits running through it. Oh so good!

The pomegranate and blueberry was also delicious. Blueberry was the dominate flavor, but it was swirled with the tart pomegranate, and it made a perfect combination. Their strawberry was chocked full of big chunks of strawberry. Much less sweet than strawberry ice cream, it light and tart, and perfectly balanced. My least favorite was the margarita. Ok you can laugh at me, but I’ve never actually had a margarita, so I was interested in finally discovering what it tasted like. Unfortunately, it tasted like limes, and I’m not a big lime, or lemon, fan (David here, I love limes and it was my fave). But that’s all me, not the sherbet. If you like limes or margaritas, I think you’d really like this one. But once again, Me? Not so much. I didn’t get to try the mango, because I’m allergic and I didn’t want my tongue to swell up. I was tempted to try it anyway, but decided not to chance it.

Overall, I love this sherbet, which really sucks because my local grocery stores don’t carry it! But there is good news, Pierre’s Ice Cream Company has an online store where all these wonderful fruity concoctions can be purchased. Their website also has a store locator where you can find what stores carry Pierre’s in your state. And those of you in Ohio are the luckiest of all, since Pierre’s Ice Cream Co. is located in Cleveland. (I’m so jealous!)

The best part of the whole thing is that it doesn’t hurt my stomach like ice cream does. So for those of you out there who love ice cream, but can’t eat it any more, because of stupid lactose intolerance, check out Pierre’s Hola Fruta! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
